In the 2009 Tour de France, he managed to climb the Alps with the best riders. Although he fell in the 4th stage, losing more than 6 minutes, his performance resulted in a 15th place in the ranking and 9th place for the polka dot jersey.The year after, he gained the 5th place in the 2010 Tour de France. He is the first Belgian to finish in the top 5 since Claude Criquielion in 1986. In the 2011 Tour de France, after a very hopeful first week and aiming for a GC podium spot, he had to abandon the race due to a downhill crash which left him with a pneumothorax, broken ribs and a fractured shoulder.
