.With a population of about 40206 it is the third largest city in Jammu region and the sixth largest in the state.Its population is expected to be 1,50,000 by 2011.The word 'Kathua"is derived from the word"Thuan" in Dogri which means "Scorpios".The city was the land of scorpios before the settling of the Dogras who came here and made the city.Some have a belief that its name is derived fom the name of rishi kashyap who disguised himself as a torotise(kashua)for strong meditation.
