Kerala Congress (Jacob) was born when T. M. Jacob with his supporting MLA - Johnny Nellore, Mathew Stephen and P. M. Mathew decided to split from the Kerala Congress led by former Minister K. M. Mani. P. M. Mathew and Mathew Stephen later returned to his former party. Kerala Congress (Jacob) has its stronghold in the eastern parts of Ernakulam district.

Since its inception Kerala Congress had always been part of the UDF until it left the front in 2005. The party dissolved into the then newly formed Democratic Indira Congress party led by former Chief Minister K. Karunakaran.
