Deery began his career with Derry and District League team Trojans and due to his outstanding ability he quickly caught the eye of Derry City scouts, who convinced their club to sign the player in 2001.
Although he suffered ligament damage in the 2005 pre-season and again during his comeback, in 2006, Deery has been involved with a successful Derry team, including a UEFA Cup run. He scored two long range goals in the 5-1 away defeat of Gretna F.C. helping to ensure Derrys progress into the first round proper.
He has been capped at under-19 and under-21 level. He made his debut for the Republic of Ireland U21s at Tolka Park in October 2005 against Switzerland. He has also earned his first call up for the Republic of Ireland B team.
