Krishnapura (
Tulu,
Kannada: ಕೃಷ್ಣಾಪುರ ) is a village located near
Surathkal and comes under the limits of
Mangalore City Corporation,
Karnataka,
India.The place is 3 kilometre from the heart of Suratkal town. The original inhabitants of this area were mostly around Krishnapura Matha.Most of the area before 1970's were covered by evergreen forests mostly of
ebony trees.The government took over land mostly belonging to Krishnapura Matha and handed over for rehabitation of evacutee's affected by project of new sea port at
Panambur. Many residents of this place were relocated from Panambur, when the
New Mangalore Port Trust was established. In 1969 the families situated at
Baikampady were rehabilitated at Krishnapura and were alloted house sites of 12.5 cents each.
It also houses the
Krishnapura Matha (Monastery), one of the ashta (eight ) matha's founded by
Dvaita philosopher Shri
Madhvacharya.The matha is very ancient one.
The Mukhyaprana (
Hanuman) god inside the Krishnapura matha is considered very sacred.The Krishnapura Matha was built several centuries ago and has marvelous wooden carving. The building is supported by gigantic wooden pillars. It is rare to found such intricate wood carving of such large scale in today's world. The building shows mastery and skills of our ancestors.
There is a famous Temple called Vishvanatha temple built in 1960. There is also a small
