Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR), is a constituent college of the
University of Delhi. It is recognized as one of the premier women's institutions for liberal arts education in
India.
History and evolution
Established in 1956 in
New Delhi by the late
Lala Shri Ram in memory of his wife, Phoolan Devi (Lady Shri Ram), the college had its modest beginnings in a school building in
Daryaganj, Central Delhi with 243 students, 9 faculty, 4 support staff and 3 distinct courses of study. The aim of the institution was to provide access to higher education of quality to women.
Today, the college, located in a campus in
Lajpat Nagar in
South Delhi, has approximately 2000 students, over 150 faculty, administrative and support staff and 16 courses of study. a students' cafeteria and a counselling and placement cell. Sports training facilities for lawn tennis, basketball, shooting, volleyball, chess, table tennis and martial arts are also available. For out-of-town students, the LSR campus houses a residence for 300 women students with an in-house library and dispensary.
