Lake Washington High School is one of four
high schools in the
Lake Washington School District, with an enrollment of approximately 1800 students. It is in the
Rose Hill neighborhood of
Kirkland, Washington.
The school building was constructed in 1949 and opened in January, 1950 and it was extensively expanded in the 1990s. The alternative 90-student
Northstar Junior High is on the same campus, but in a separate building. Lake Washington High School's colors are purple and white and the mascot is the
kangaroo.
House system
Lake Washington High School students participate in a
house system. In this system, all the students are put into one of four houses (Earth, Wind, Fire, Water) and remain in that house with whatever teachers or students were also assigned into it for the duration of their high school career.
Construction of new building
Beginning at the end of the 2007-2008 school year, the campus has undergone severe construction work to clear a space for and build a new building. The design of the building is to go along with the newly implemented house system. The new gym was completed before the end of the 2009-2010 school year with the rest to follow soon afterward.The construction effectively removed all entrances and exits to the school aside from the main one.
