Newsweek Magazine (May 16,
2005) listing of the best 1,200 public high schools in the nation, Lakeside ranked at 107, the highest in Georgia. In the May 23, 2006 edition of the list, which is based on the number of AP and IB tests taken as compared to the number of graduating seniors, Lakeside ranked 135, just below
Riverwood High School in nearby
Sandy Springs, which ranked 132.
Demographics
The school is located in a predominantly upper middle class suburban community and serves students from the entire DeKalb County School System. The student body is composed of 47.3% White, 24.2% Black, 14.3% Latino, and 13.9% of additional ethnic groups. In 1985, Lakeside was honoured as a State and National School of Excellence; an honour which reflects the positive relationship between the school and community. In 1996, Lakeside nearly doubled its enrollment from 989 to 1,679 due to a merger with Henderson and Shamrock High schools, both of which are currently middle schools.
