If there's one fruit of the Holy Spirit that we need the most, it's the fruit of self-control.
Once we become Christians, we not only receive Christ's salvation into our lives but we are also given the Holy Spirit. He resides in us and we are given the opportunity to allow Him to sanctify us. Of course, the first thing we need to do is ask for the Spirit's gift to manifest in us. With the help of the Holy Spirit's gifts, we can grow into the type of person God wants us to be.
Thanks to our materialistic world, many of us are quite impulsive. We want every single thing we see and oftentimes, we want it right on the spot.
It's because of this impulsive nature that we need help in. We can learn how to control our impulses better with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Self-control doesn't just apply to our desire to acquire new gadgets, but also to our addictions.
There are several areas in our lives where we would need the help of the Holy Spirit for us to control. A few examples are listed below:
1. Temper
2. Addictions (drugs, alcohol, porn, etc.)
3. Adultery or cheating
4. Overeating
5. Impulsive shopping
6. Judgmental behavior
There's plenty more that can be added but these are some of the main problems most of us struggle with on a daily basis.
If you look around you, you'd probably come across people in your circle that can't stop smoking cigarettes or maybe spend too much money on shopping. At times, you'll find others who constantly overeat; it's these kinds of addiction that must be regulated through self-control.
This is where the Holy Spirit comes into play. His guidance can help us become better people. The Holy Spirit isn't only a teacher or a guide but also referred to as the "Helper." He can assist u
s in every single aspect of our lives if we are only open to receiving Him.
If you want to achieve a more meaningful life, go to the Lord in prayer right now and ask for His guidance. You can gain victory from your addictions with the help of the Holy Spirit.
Of course, it takes two to tango so make sure that you are receptive towards the Spirit's guidance as well. Make sure that you understand what he asks of you and always commit to them.
You might have come across the verse, "not by your might and your power but by the power of the Holy Spirit;" this phrase is quite true. We cannot do anything by ourselves and no matter how much try; we will never be able to overcome our problems without the Spirit.
Take the first step now and start enjoying a more fruitful life. Practice self-control and start living a more meaningful Christian life with the help of the Holy Spirit within you.
