Let S Play Friday The 13th
The Friday the 13th movies have always been a staple of the horror genre. The series has put out several movies not to mention a number of spinoffs and movies featuring the deranged slasher himself, Jason Vorhees. To piggyback on the success of the film franchise, LJN put out a Friday the 13th NES game in the early 1990's. The game did a good job representing the action and suspense of the films and makes for a fun and very replayable game which I have played lots of times; so, if you're ready, let's play Friday the 13th!
The first thing you need to do is choose your camp counselor. There are 6 counselors to choose from. George is slow, can't jump high, but can throw rocks and other weapons very effectively. Mark is the overall best player in the game hands down as he excels at jumping, running speed, throwing speed, and boat rowing. Paul is likely the worst player in the game as he is slow, can't jump, can't row, etc.
On the female side you have Laura who is in many ways the female equivalent of Mark. She can run, jump, row, throw; everything you want out of your player. Debbie is almost as bad as George and Paul in that she isn't very athletic so likely isn't worth your time unless you're running out of options. Crissy is a good 3rd option if you don't have Mark or Laura anymore in that she is very quick which I value over any other physical ability in this game.
Once you have chosen your counselor, again I recommend Mark, you'll be right there in the game. You can avoid enemies like the zombies by jumping over them or you can hit "B" to throw your weapon. You start off with a rock but you can pick up better weapons as the game progresses. You'll notice random items appear on the screen as you jump about or kill enemies. You'll first want to grab a key, a lighter, and a knife when they appear.
The game is based around Jason's activities. Once he appears somewhere on your map you'll hear an alert sound and you should check your map to see who he is currently attacking. Go to that location to save one of your friends or one of the campers by fighting Jason head on. When battling Jason in a cabin, you can push down plus left or right to dodge his attacks in that direction. It's generally best to dodge then fire back your weapon at Jason and after you hit him 10 times or so, he'll disappear until he eventually turns up somewhere else on the map. Eventually you'll do enough damage to kill him, but the worse your weapon the longer it will take you. Therefore it's best to prioritize getting a better weapon whenever Jason isn't attacking someone.
The other thing to mention is that in the cave there is a hidden door which you'll need a key to get into but if you enter you'll find the disembodied head of Jason's mom who will immediately attack you. Kill her to get a better weapon: the machete.
Check out my friday the 13th playthrough video to see me play through the entire game in 20 minutes, showing all of the various secrets and tips on how to get the best weapons in the game to destroy Jason.
