Line B (Charpennes - Stade-de-Gerland) of the Lyon Metro was constructed using the cut-and-cover method, and went into service on May 2, 1978. Trains run on tires rather than steel wheels.

Future
Line B will be extended a few kilometers Southwards from Stade-de-Gerland to Oullins. A tunnel will have to be built under the Rhône River. This extension is due to open in 2013.
In the long term, the line should be automatized and equipped with rolling stock similar to the one of the Line 14 in Paris.
