The station was opened as on September 23, 1908 by Yokohama Railway, a predecessor of the Yokohama Line. The station was moved 0.4 km toward Hachiōji and renamed Machida on April 1, 1980.
Ridership
An average of 104,576 passengers a day boarded trains at Machida Station in fiscal 2006. This ranks 30th among all JR East stations.
