Malda College is premier college under the
University of Gour Banga, which offers
postgraduate and
undergraduate courses in several subjects. Established in 1944 by Mr.
Durga Kinkar Bhattacharyya, it is one of the more sophisticated and enriched colleges of
northern Bengal. The college has excellent infrastructure of which is an impressive collection of almost ninety thousand books (in its L.A.N.-connected undergraduate and postgraduate libraries), well equipped and spacious
laboratories, an observatory-class
telescope, lecture theatre with movie projector, an expansive computer facility, and a capacious
auditorium complex, are only a few to name.
History
The structure and constitution of
Malda College evolved many times to reach the present point. In pre-independence northern Bengal, there was a temporary college at
Dadanchak before
Malda College was formally and permanently founded. The college later shifted its premises to Rathbari More, Rabindra Avenue-area of the district town of
Malda. Prior to this, in 1943, a report was published in one of the popular local newspapers appealing the public of the
district of Malda to donate in order to establish the estimated fund of
Rupees Three
Lakhs, required to change the
Dadanchak-college's location to
Malda Town. The much needed land was given by Mr. Jadunandan Choudhury and Mr. Asutosh Choudhury. In a very little time, the people of
