Marshall Tillbrook Poe (born December 29, 1961) is an American writer and historian. He is a member of the Department of History at the University of Iowa, and a visiting professor at Eastern Michigan University for the 2007-8 academic year.

Poe is the author or editor of a number of books on early modern Russia, and the founder and editor ofMemoryArchive, a universal wiki-type archive of contemporary memoirs he began with his students at American University in 2005. There he has contributed numerous personal accounts of his own, from playing basketball with Barack Obama, to stumbling onto a Dennis Rader (the infamous BTK killer) crime scene. He has also become known for his commentary on Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia.

Education and academic career

Poe graduated from Wichita High School Southeast in 1980. He earned a B.A. at Grinnell College in 1984 and his Ph.D. in history at the University of California, Berkeley in 1992.

He taught at Harvard University until 1998, and again from 2000 to 2002, during which time he was appointed Allston Burr Senior Tutor at Harvard's Lowell House. He has held fellowships at the Davis Center for Russian Studies at Harvard; the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey; and the Harriman Institute for Russian Studies at Columbia University.
