Club career

A product of FC Bayern Munich's youth ranks, Hummels signed his first professional contract on 19 December 2006, until 2010. On 19 May 2007, in the season's final match, he played his first league game with the first team, in a 5–2 home routing of 1. FSV Mainz 05.

On January 2008, Hummels joined Borussia Dortmund, initially on loan. In February 2009, he was fully signed to the club.

The 2010-11 brought increased success for Hummels. He is the regular first-choice center-back, again paired with Subotic. The duo have helped Dortmund to the best defensive record in the Bundesliga and to the unofficial title of Autumn Champions. Hummels's performances this season have displayed great quality in tackling, positioning, and composure. He has attracted praise from pundits and coaches alike, and he is considered one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga.
