Melur is the leading manufacturer and exporter of ploughs. Granite is the most important business in Melur. Very high quality granite is exported to all around the world from Melur. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people of Melur Taluk. Sugarcane and Paddy are most culitivated crops.

• Alagar Koil is a temple located 20&nbsp;km from Melur. It's a historical temple under a dense forest and mountain. One of the Lord Muruga's ARUPADAI VEEDU - PAZHAMUTHIR CHOLAI is in the mountain...Theertha Thotti is famous for that temple. The non stop theertham is believed to be originating from Ganges.

• On the way to Melur from Madurai, a nice place Othakkadai is placed, where there is a beautiful mountain is placed named Yanaimalai. A famous temple dedicated to Lord Narasimha is located at othakkadai.
