The New Zealand Ministry of Defence is the arm of the New Zealand Government charged with providing advice on defence matters, as well as providing civilian administration and oversight over the New Zealand Defence Force.
A Defence Review was announced in April 2009 by the National-led government.
Responsibilities
The Ministry is responsible for the following functions:
Providing advice to the New Zealand Government on the Defence of New Zealand and its national interests,
Acquisition of Military Equipment,
Assessment and audit of the New Zealand Defence Force functions, duties and projects.
On a day to day basis the Secretary of Defence, (currently John McKinnon), holds the position of Chief Executive of the Ministry, and answers to the Minister.
