The Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (Abbreviation: MEWR; Chinese: 新加坡环境及水源部; Malay: Kementerian Alam Sekitar dan Sumber Air) formerly the Ministry of the Environment (ENV), is a ministry of the Government of Singapore responsible for providing a quality living environment and a high standard of public health, protected against the spread of communicable diseases. It was set up in 1972, and today, together with its two statutory boards – the National Environment Agency (NEA) and Public Utilities Board – the Ministry’s area of responsibility has widened to include ensuring a clean and hygienic living environment, as well as managing the complete water cycle – from sourcing, collection, purification and supply of drinking water; to the treatment of used water and recycling into NEWater; as well as storm water drainage.
