Description:

Monroe College of New Rochelle made history Saturday when it played its first home football game ever.

Unfortunately, the match-up on SUNY Maritime's Reinhart Field was bittersweet as the Nassau Community College Lions crushed the Mustangs, 49-7. The Lions earned touchdowns on their first three possessions, leading 21-0 at the end of the 1st quarter, and the Mustangs never recovered. Monroe is now 1-2 this season.

The first, and thus far only, home touchdown for Monroe came in the beginning of the fourth quarter when quarterback Mike Campbell tossed a screen pass to running back Curlee Walker, who took the ball up the sideline 25 yards for the score.

Hundreds of fans descended on Reinhart Field with their yellow towels to watch the Mustangs' first home game.

"It was great to make history today and play in front of our home fans for the first time," said Monroe head coach Terry Karg. "We played against one of the better teams in the country, and we know what we have to do. We're going to work hard every day to make ourselves a better football team."

The game also featured a crazy play in which Monroe blocked a point-after attempt by Nassau. But one of the Lions fell on the ball in the end zone, which gave Nassau a two-point conversion.

Monroe next plays rival ASA College at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, in Brooklyn. The Mustangs play their homecoming game against Globe at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30.
