The Central Government in consultation with the Planning Commission had sanctioned a scheme of establishment of Regional Engineering Colleges under the Third Five Year Plan. The Regional Engineering College, Kurukshetra (now NIT Kururkshetra) was one of the seventeen colleges in the country. It was established in 1963 as a joint and cooperative enterprise of the government off India and the state government of Haryana.
Parliamentary legislation in 2002 brought it under the direct purview of India's federal government and it was made National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra. In 2007, through another legislation, the Indian government declared NITs as Institutes of National Importance.
