How to Restore Oak Beams

Oak beams are found in countless old-fashioned households, although over time they may take on a dark, dingyappearance as they accumulate dirt and dust, specifically because oak is an open-pored wood that easily gathers dust in its holes. By taking the time to refurbish oak beams, you can adjust them from blah to a major architectural feature of any room.

Wipe the plank using a solution of four parts water to one part ammonia. Use a clean, lint-free cloth and wipe the beam from one section to the other. If the beam is uneven sawed, use a soft-bristled scrub brush.

Take off developed, stuck-on dirt by using the same ammonia mixture and a green Scotch-Brite pad. Alternatively, use mineral spirits in its place of the ammonia. One will generally work better than the other.

Take off the finish with a commercial finish remover. If the wood is only clear-coated, try denatured alcohol, mineral spirits and lacquer thinner. Be aware of the directions on the finish remover, as they vary from brand to brand and even product to product within the same brand.

Mix half mineral or tung oil and boiled linseed oil and spill on the top of the freshly stripped beams. Permit to set for a couple minutes, and remove the excess by rubbing the surface down with a clean cloth. This will overhaul the tinmber by permitting the oils to soak in and trade any dried-out oils that are naturally happening in the oak.

Dye the oak beam, if desired. Pour on the top layer with stain, and permit it to stay for a minute or two. Then wipe the excess off with a clean cloth. Repeat the stage to get a dimmer look.

If hollows or marks are noticeable in the wood, use a filler that is designed to match the stain colour applied. Do this after the dye is parched but before applying the top coat for some makes and after applying the top coat for others. Read the packaging to determine what type you are dealing with.

Finish the renewal with a top coat that is compatible with the dye. For polish, using an airless painter is the ideal way to apply it. Other finishes may be painted on, but spraying would also prove beneficial.
