Ocala is situated near the site of Ocale or Ocali, an essential Timucua village and chiefdom through the 16th century. The modern city takes its name belonging to the historical village, the name of which is thought to mean "Big Hammock" inside of the Timucua language. Hernando de Soto passed through Ocale throughout his famous expedition by way of what is today the southeastern United States in 1539. Ocale just isn't mentioned in any later accounts; it seems of having been abandoned during the wake of de Soto's attack.

From the twentieth century, Ocala accelerated in prominence as a heart for tourism in Florida. Important destinations included the Silver Springs Nature Theme Park, Wild Waters waterpark, and also the now-defunct Western-themed Six Gun Territory, all in nearby Silver Springs, Florida. Silver Springs is a 350-acre (1.4 km2) nature theme park that surrounds the headwaters of the Silver River, the biggest artesian spring formation across the world.

Ocala began going through rapid growth in the 1970s along with the development of the Interstate 75 and also the founding of Disney World, positioned some 70 miles (110 km) southeast.

Within the last decades of the last century, the greater Ocala area experienced one of the greatest growth rates in the united states for any city its size. The population of Marion County in 2000 ended up being over 250,000, up from under 100,000 in 1975. A great deal of the county's growth is owing to the area's developing popularity as a retirement living location, mostly in 2 locations south west and south from the city: the SR 200 corridor and The Villages, respectively.
