While neither Papua New Guinean athlete managed to advance out of the first round, both managed to set new national records in their events.

Men's 400 metre Hurdles:
  • Mowen Boino
    • Round 1: 50.97 s (8th in heat 4, did not advance, 30th overall) (Papua New Guinean Record)

Women's 100 metres:
  • Mae Koime
    • Round 1: 12.00 s (6th in heat 7, did not advance, 44th overall) (Papua New Guinean Record)


Papua New Guinea's only swimmer in Athens came within a couple of tenths of a second from qualifying for semifinals in two of his three events, but fell just short, with his best performance an 18th in the 100 metre butterfly.

Men's 100 metre Freestyle:

    • Heat: 51.11 s (39th overall, did not advance)

Men's 100 metre Backstroke:

    • Heat: 55.97 s (20th overall, did not advance)

Men's 100 metre Butterfly:

Toua was well back of the medal positions, but with her final lift managed to pass a French lifter to avoid a last-placed finish.

    • 177.5 kg (Snatch: 75.0 kg, Clean & Jerk: 102.5 kg, 6th overall)
