Paulo Jorge Sousa Gomes (born 4 March 1975 in Viseu) is a retired Portuguese footballer who played as a defensive midfielder.

Football career

During his Portuguese career, Gomes represented C.D. Tondela, Académico de Viseu, A.D. Lousada, Vitória de Guimarães, Sporting Clube de Braga, União Desportiva de Leiria, F.C. Paços de Ferreira and F.C. Penafiel.

He made his first division debut for Guimarães, against S.C. Salgueiros in a 3–2 loss, on 12 September 1998. Coach Zoran Filipović handed him his first chance. Almost ten years later, he contributed with two league matches as Paços achieved an historical UEFA Cup qualification, but finished the season at Penafiel, in the second level.

In 2008–09, Gomes moved abroad, signing with Cypriot outfit Atromitos Yeroskipou joining, among other compatriots, former Leiria defender Hugo Costa. After only one season, he returned to Portugal and Viseu (with the club then in the third division); he retired in June 2010, at the age of 35.
