Malappuram District is a district of Kerala state in southern India. The district headquarters are at Malappuram.

Places of importance in Malappuram district

There are various places of touristic, ecological, religious and historic importance in the district, including:
  • Malapuram City-- This historic city is the district capital. Dist. Collector, Civil Stn.,Dist. Police etc. all are headquartered in this town. The city is mainly divided into 3 parts : Up-Hill, Middle Hill and Down Hill.
The city was the headquarters of European & British troops. The present Civil Stn. was the Cantontment of British Army. Their Cantontment Hill is now a major tourist spot - Kotakunnu(Fort Hill in English). The funeral of the Martyrs of 1921 Mapila Rebellion (known as "Malappuram Shaheeds") are at Valiyangadi in the city. Some freedom fighters are shot dead at Kotakunnu, by British Army. Malabar Special Police, which is established in 1921 is headquartered in Up-Hill. HQ of India's Largest Gramin Bank-SMG Bank is in on Ahmed Kurikkal Road in the Middle Hill of the city.
