Prannoy L Roy, Ph.D (Bengali: প্রনয রায) (born October 15, 1949), is an Indian journalist and media baron. He is the founder and Executive Chairperson of New Delhi Television (NDTV).

Early life

Prannoy Roy was born in Calcutta to a Bengali father ("Hurricane" Roy) who was the chief executive of the Indian unit of a British company and an Irish/English mother who was a teacher. He spent the first few years of his life at Kolkata & studied in La Martiniere, Calcutta. He then attended The Doon School, Dehradun, later winning a scholarship to Haileybury in the UK for his A-levels and did his BSc in Economics from University of London's, Queen Mary College with first class honours in 1973. He is a qualified Chartered Accountant, a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (England and Wales) and has a Ph.D in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics.


Prannoy Roy taught at Delhi School of Economics for a year. He has also served as Economic Advisor to the Government of India.

TV career

A trained psephologist, he debuted in 1984 as the new centre point of televised coverage of India's general elections. His predictions of the results proved to be uncanny. But it was his ability to translate complicated facts into simple analysis that turned him into the journalist that India would depend on, night after night, for its news.
