Prithviraj Chavan (; born 17 March 1946) is the current Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The Indian National Congress selected him to be the successor of Ashok Chavan. He is a Member of the Parliament of India representing Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. He was the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office.

Early life

Prithviraj Chavan is basically from village Kumbhargaon Tal:Patan Dist;Satara was born in Maratha family in Indore to D. R. Chavan. He has a B.E (Hons in Mechanical Engineering) from BITS, Pilani and also a M.S. from University of California, Berkeley. He spent some time working in the field of aircraft instrumentation and designing audio recorders for anti-submarine warfare in the US before returning to India and entering Indian politics.

Political career

Chavan started his political career in 1991, and won the family seat of Karad thrice, in '91, '96 and '98 and lost it in 1999.

He was the Minister of State for the ministries of Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and in charge of Prime Minister's Office.
