The school was opened in 1953 as the Robert Pattinson School. Sir Robert Pattinson was the Chairman of Kesteven County Council for 20 years, and for 50 years a County Councillor. He was Liberal MP for Grantham 1922 - 23. It was a 'bilateral' school (part grammar/part secondary modern) until January 1961 when the grammar school students transferred to the newly opened North Kesteven Grammar School.
It became a comprehensive when Lincoln went comprehensive in September 1970 and became a Grant-maintained school in 1992, transferring to Foundation status in 1999.
The school has four houses, Windsor, Stuart, Tudor and York (named after historic families within the British Royalty), who compete in sporting events throughout the year to attempt to win the Governors Cup. This is presented at Sports Day each year, which is traditionally held in the first week of July.
