<!-- See WikiProject Indian cities for details -->Shamli is a city, tehsil and a municipal board in Muzaffarnagar district in the Indianstate of Uttar Pradesh. It is located on the Delhi - Saharanpur highway. It is around 100 km from Delhi, 38 km from Panipat and 65 km from Saharanpur. Shamli is known for its old sugar mill called Upper Doab Sugar Mill, and serves as a market town for surrounding villages.Ruskin Bond made the town immortal and connected it with literature when he wrote the book "Time Stops at Shamli". Shamli also appears in Cinema- "Aaja Nachle", Madhuri Dixit's 2007 Bollywood movie,is based in this small town which has the theater Ajanta.
During the first struggle for freedom in 1857 a lot of action was in the District. CHAUDHARY MOHAR SINGH of Shamli and SAIYED-PATHANS of Thanabhawan fought against the British and captured the Tehsil of Shamli. But later on the British army showed its brutality and recaptured the area. A lot of freedom fighters were done to death by them and this attempt was failed.In addition to the 1857, the town witnessed important wars like the Battles of Panipat, and the battles during the rise of the Sikhs whose influence was felt as far as Shamli and Jalalabad.
