The Sinan Erdem Dome
(), formerly known as the Ataköy Dome
, is a multi-purpose indoor arena
that is located on the European
side of Istanbul
It has a seating capacity
of 22,500 for concerts and for the sport of basketball
it has a seating capacity of 16,000 people, making it Turkey's largest multi-purpose indoor venue and the third largest in Europe (although it is not the third largest in Europe in capacity for basketball use). The arena is named after Sinan Erdem
(1927–2003), who was the President of the National Olympic Committee of Turkey
from 1989 until his death in 2003.
Sinan Erdem Dome successfully hosted the 2010 FIBA World Championship
and will host the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships
, the 2012 FINA Short Course World Championships
, and the 2011-2013 WTA Tour Championships
.The arena will host the 2011-12 Euroleague Final Four
.For the 2010 FIBA World Championship, most of the 16,000 seats were in temporary stands built on top of the permanent stands, exclusively for the tournament. They are to be dismantled after the tournament.
