Description:
The South River is one of the two main tributaries of the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. It begins south of Staunton, Virginia, and flows northward to the South Fork of the Shenandoah River, where it merges with the North and Middle River rivers.

The South River flows through Stuarts Draft, Waynesboro, Grottoes, and points north.

Ecology

In Waynesboro, the DuPont (now Invista) plant, and others, heavily polluted the river with mercury."Mercury Still Stains South River", The Daily News Record, April 5, 2008 Now, it is unsafe to eat fish caught from the river and fishing most of the way up the South Fork of the Shenandoah River is catch and release only.
