St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital was founded in 1954 by the
Episcopal Diocese of Texas. It operates within the only church-governed health system in Houston.
Since its opening, St. Luke's has received numerous awards for its medical accomplishments. The hospital is credited with hosting the first successful heart transplantation, the first artificial heart implantation, the first successful bypass for congenital heart defect and the first laser angioplasty procedure. In 2010, for the 20th consecutive year, St. Luke's, along with the Texas Heart Institute was selected by
U.S. News & World Report as one of "America's Best Hospitals," ranking #5 for "Heart & Heart Surgery." Similarly, in 2002, 2004 and 2005, St. Luke's was named to FORTUNE Magazine's list of "100 Best Companies to Work For."
