It became the British Settlement of Malacca after the dissolution of the Straits Settlements; it existed from 1946 to 1957.
In the year 1955, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra al-Haj held a meeting with the British to get independence; the British agreed. On 31 August 1957, Malacca (soon to be renamed Melaka) gained its independence as part of the Federation of Malaya.
