() (14 April 1921 in Jhansi
, Uttar Pradesh
– 21 May 2005 in Mumbai
) was a renowned movie-maker
(producer and director)of Bengali
origin. He was the brother of the leading producer director Sashadhar Mukherjee
. He is succeeded by his wife Kamala, his sons Subhash and Sanjoy and his daughter Gitanjali.(needs some citation).
Subodh Mukerji, was a devotee of the school of movie-making that believed that films were all about great storytelling. In the first two decades of his career, he had a high success percentage, but like so many movie-makers of his generation, he floundered from the seventies and quit in 1985. Ironically, later movie-makers often usurped the germs of his movies’ plotlines, the most prominent being the 1993 Shreemaan Aashique which unsuccessfully tried to recycle the plot of his mega hit movie, Shagird. Manmohan Desai’s Parvarish had reference points to Munimji, and Basu Chaterjee’s Priyatama to Abhinetri.
As the younger brother of movie-maker, studio baron and mentor Sashadhar Mukerji, Subodh had his brother’s flair for cinema that was a blend of a strong storyline, deft screenplay, fun, emotions and loads of music. Despite this, he moved out of the shadows of his elder brother to create movies that can be counted among the leading entertainers of the fifties, sixties and seventies.
