Sudha Shivpuri (born 1937) is a noted
TV actress, who is most famous for her role as 'Baa' in the
Hindi TV serial
Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (2000–2008).
Biography
Early life
Brought up in
Rajasthan, Sudha Shivpuri started her career early, when she was in the eighth standard in school. Her father had died, and her mother had fallen ill, thus the onus of earning a living for the family came on to her, and so she started acting in plays.
Career
She joined
All India Radio,
Jaipur as a radio artist; it was here that she met
Om Shivpuri, who was also working at the time.
Later they both joined
National School of Drama,
New Delhi, and when they graduated in 1964, they joined the recently formed NSD Repertory Company, as actors; Om Shivpuri became its first Chief as well.
Om Shivpuri and Sudha got married in 1968, and continued work in
Delhi theatre and formed their own theatre company, 'Dishantar', which produced several important play of its era, including, ‘Aadhe Adhurey’, Tughlaq, and
Vijay Tendulkar's Khamosh! Adalat Jari Hai’ in which she played the lead role, all directed by
Om Shivpuri himself.
In 1974, she shifted to
Mumbai, as her husband has started getting many offers from
Hindi films.
She made her film debut with
Basu Chatterjee's film
Swami in 1977, and went on to act in films like
Insaaf Ka Tarazu, Hamari Bahu Alka,
