It's Marissa's first day at Newport Union - Orange County's answer to public education. The gang tries to comfort her, but they're the ones who need comforting.

Back at the Cohen residence, Sandy is excited about Ryan's new tutor for his home-schooling program, but Ryan wants to go to Newport Union so he can look after Marissa. Sandy tells him he needs to start thinking about college, not Marissa.

Meanwhile, Julie gets a visit from the foreclosure agent, who informs her that her house and its contents are being seized for repayment of debt. She has 48 hours to vacate the property.

Marissa literally runs into tough girl Heather in the halls of Newport Union, who challenges her to a fight. Just in the nick of time another student, Casey, steps in and Heather takes off. Casey tells her that her expensive bag and shoes will make her some enemies in a public school.

Summer is supervising preparations for the upcoming school dance when Taylor Townsend comes in asking if Summer needs any help. Summer rebuffs her, as she resents her for informing on Marissa and getting Ryan kicked out of school. Taylor admits that she has no friends; she doesn't trust people, so she tries to control them, which drives them further away. Taylor finally wins Summer over with a little...
