  • 1962 - Civil war spreads to Southern Sudan led by the Anyanya separatist movement.
  • October 1964 - October Revolution overthrows Abboud's regime.
  • May 1969 - Gaafar Nimeiry leads a military coup.
  • 1971 - Attempted Communist coup against Nimeiry fails and the leaders executed.
