Tommy Suharto (real name
Hutomo Mandala Putra) (July 15, 1962) is the youngest son of
Suharto, the former
President of
Indonesia. In 2002 he was found guilty and jailed for giving the order for the assassination/killing of a Supreme Court Judge of the Republic of Indonesia, Syafiuddin Kartasasmita, SH.
Bali Land Scandals
Tommy in the 80s used the Indonesian Army to force landowners in the
Nusa Dua and
Dreamland Beach areas to sell land at cheap prices to a company controlled by him. Today this land is reported to be still owned by him. His company leases this land to many mega resort operators including
Starwood,
Accor, and
Hilton.
Criminal convictions
Tommy was convicted and sentenced in 2002 to fifteen years jail for paying a
hitman to kill Syafiuddin Kartasasmita, a Supreme Court judge who had convicted him of
graft. Other charges include illegal weapons possession and running from the law.
He received a fifteen year sentence and served part of it in
Cipinang Penitentiary Institution (LP Cipinang),
Jatinegara,
East Jakarta. His sentence was reduced to ten years on appeal, and he was given conditional release on October 30, 2006. "Lucky Tommy,"
