Uchila, anglicised as "Uchil", is near
Someshwara on the way from
Mangalore to
Talapady.. One of the popular locations here is the Someshwara temple on a hilltop near the sea.
Another
Uchila is near
Yermal in Udupi Taluk on the way from Mangalore to
Udupi were it has Mahalakshmi temple which is famous temple for
mogaveeras. Incidentally both are fishing villages facing the
Arabian Sea.. Both are linked by National Highway 17 (
NH 17).
The primary occupation of the village folk is fishing, though trading and real estate seems a booming profession here. The natives have adopted the name of the village and use it for a surname. This act is not religion specific, Uchila being a classic example of Hindu, Muslim and Christian people living harmoniously with each other sharing the same language and last name.
The language spoken is a blend of Kannada, Tulu, Malayalam, coorgi and Tamil and they mostly follow the Kodava cultures and traditions. Uchila is a hotspot for retiring couples as more and more duplex houses are being built. Guesthouses are available in plenty and a great weekend getaway to Uchila would cost less than Rs.2k inclusive of food.
Uchils (natives of Uchila) worship the female deity- Bhagavathi and have an annual festival to celebrate within the community.
Another famouse dargah is there in the name of "Sayyed Arabi Sahidar Valiullah"
