<!-- See WikiProject Indian cities for details -->Umaria is a town in Madhya Pradesh state of central India. It is the headquarters of Umaria District.

History

Umariya is ruled by Lodhi Rajputs (Malgujars). This Lodhi Rajput Family has built the famous and important temple of Lakshmi Narayan on southern bank of Narbada Barman ghat. They also built on the steps of the northern bank of Barman ghat Kareli a great gateway called the Hathi Darwaza, as their elephants can pass through it.

Demographics

Umaria has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 59%. In Umaria, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.
