Its purpose was to help implement the General Peace Agreement, signed between the President of Mozambique, Joaquim Chissano, and the President of the Resist├¬ncia Nacional Mo├žambicana (Renamo), Afonso Dhlakama. The mandate included facilitating the implementation of the Agreement; monitoring the ceasefire; monitoring the withdrawal of foreign forces and providing security in the transport corridors; providing technical assistance and monitoring the entire electoral process. ONUMOZ operated from December of 1992 to December of 1994.
