Vijayakumar () is a
Tamil actor and
politician. Along with predominant work in
Tamil cinema since 1973, he has acted in a few
Hindi and
Telugu movies. As of 2009, he is acting in the television serial,
Thangam, aired on
Sun TV.
Early life
Vijayakumar was born in
Nattuchalai,
Tamil Nadu, India. He debuted as a 12-year old in the 1961 Tamil movie
Sri Valli. Again in 1964 with the help of his uncle, he came to
Chennai at the age of 15 years and tried for chances but could not make it. Later in 1973 he got an offer to act in films. His first major role was in
Kailasam Balachander's
Aval Oru Thodar Kathai in 1974.
Professional career
His/He journey in filmdom began as a child actor in the film
Sri Valli in 1961. In 1973 Vijayakumar got his first break in
Ponnuku Thanga Manasu directed by P. Madhavan. His films of the 1970s include
Azhage Unnai Aradhikkerain,
Kizhakku Chemaiyile,
Velai Kidachirukku,
Anthimanthaarai,
Aval Oru Thodar Kathai,
Mathura Geetham,
Deepam and
Indrupol Endrum Vaazhga.
Then came Mani Ratnam's
Agni Natchathiram, which narrated the story of two half brothers who fight for their father's love and property. He has also made brief stints in
Telugu Cinema. He has acted in over 400 films. The 1995 film
Anthi Mantharai almost took him close to
National Film Award for Best Actor.
