Soccer Manager was an
online game on
Yahoo!. The game, which was free, put players in control of a
football team, where they named, trained and transferred players, trying to win their league and get
promoted to better divisions. The goal was to move from the 5th division (which was where all new teams were placed) to the 1st Division, where there was only one league with 18 teams. Each league had 18 teams, and if a player's team did well, the team would move up to a lower numbered division. The 5th Division had no leagues, as any teams that did well moved up to the 4th Division. The number of leagues in the 4th Division depended on the number of managers, so varied. At all times, the 3rd Division had 16 leagues, the 2nd had 4, and the 1st had only one league. Each team also had the player's national flag displayed on the league table.
The game closed down on 2nd February 2011.
Gameplay
The game was easy to play but difficult to master. No skill was needed to play, just tactical awareness. However, to carry out tactical transactions, one was preferably to be at their computer near to kick-off. Kick-off was 3:00 PM
CET.
International competition
Although the game has only been officially released in 4 countries in
Europe it is played worldwide and competed by 100+ countries. This is due to the four languages the game is played with.<!-- Unsourced image removed: -->
