is a Japanese politician of the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) and member of the House of Representatives in the Diet (national legislature). He is the Chief Cabinet Secretary in the Kan government.

Early life and education

Born in Utsunomiya, Tochigi, Edano is a graduate of Tohoku University. He was elected for the first time in 1993 as a member of Morihiro Hosokawa's Japan New Party.


He later participated in the 1996 formation of the DPJ. Yukio Edano was briefly selected as the Secretary General of the DPJ (Japan's ruling party) in March 2010 before being replaced by Katsuya Okada, Japan's former Foreign Minister, in September 2010. In January 2011 he became Chief Cabinet Secretary. In March 2011 he was temporarily appointed head of the Foreign Ministry.

Chief Cabinet Secretary

In the wake of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan, he was the face of the government effort to combat the aftermath, appearing on Japanese television at regular intervals to update the public on the problems caused at two reactor facilities in Fukushima prefecture that stemmed from the disasters. Because of the frequency of his appearances, he inspired Twitter users concerned for his health to post messages asking him to get some sleep, popularizing the Twitter hashtag "#edano_nero", from the imperative word for in Japanese.
