Zimbabwe competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Swimmer Kirsty Coventry won three medals. Zimbabwe had only ever won one Olympic medal before (at the 1980 Summer Olympics).

Half of Zimbabwe's competitors participated in Athletics, but none were able to make it all the way to a final. The best showing came in the 400 metres, where Lewis Banda missed out on making the final by only 0.15 seconds, an improvement that would have still fallen short of his personal best time.

Men's 200 metres:
* Round 1 — 20.72 s (→ 4th in heat 3, Qualified)
* Round 2 — 20.87 s (→ 5th in heat 2, failed to advance, 23rd overall)

Men's 400 metres:
* Round 1 — 45.37 s (→ 2nd in heat 5, Qualified)
* Semifinal — 45.23 s (→ 4th in semifinal 1, failed to advance, T-9th overall)
