Description:
The Zulu Royal family is the current ruling indigenous royal family of the Southern African Zulu peoples. The dynasty arguably began with Shaka kaSenzangakhona, who turned a small clan into a large and well-known nation. It is essentially composed of all of his descendants, though the most recognised branch of the family is the group of immediate relatives that surrounds the reigning monarch of any given era. One of Africa's most famous hereditary dynasties, the House of the Zulus is also one of modern South Africa's most powerful families due to their direct control of both popular opinion and land rights in the strategic Kwa-Zulu-Natal region of the country.

Incumbent

The present head of the Zulu Royal Family is King Goodwill Zwelethini kaBhekuzulu, the current monarch of the Zulu nation of South Africa. He was born on the 14th of July, 1948, in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal. He became king on the death of his father, His late Majesty King Cyprian Bhekuzulu kaSolomon in 1968.

Goodwill Zwelethini has six wives, the third of whom is Mantfombi Dlamini ( born in 1956 ), a princess of the Swazi as a daughter of Sobhuza II of Swaziland, who he married in 1973. A condition for this marriage was that she become first wife, which according to dynastic custom determines the king's successor.

As of 2003, he had 27 children.
