Daag: A Poem of Love is a 1973 Bollywood film produced and directed by Yash Chopra in his debut as a producer, which laid the foundation of Yash Raj Films. It is an adaptation of the novel The Mayor of Casterbridge.

The film stars Sharmila Tagore, Rajesh Khanna, Rakhee(who won her first Filmfare award), Madan Puri, Kader Khan, Prem Chopra and A.K. Hangal.

The film was made at the height of the Rajesh Khanna craze and became a "super hit" at the box office. The music by Laxmikant Pyarelal dominated the charts for the year. Film was later remade into the Telugu film Vichitra Jeevitham (1978) starring Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Vanisri, and Jayasudha.

Plot summary

A young guy, Sunil Kohli (Rajesh Khanna), falls for beautiful Sonia (Sharmila Tagore). Soon they get married and leave for their honeymoon, but on the way due to bad weather decide to spend a night at Sunil’s Boss bungalow. There Sunil’s boss’s son, Dheeraj Kapoor (Prem Chopra) attempts to rape Sonia, when she was alone. But Sunil’s arrives in time and a fight ensues resulting in the death of Dheeraj.

Sunil gets arrested and sent to jail, and later sentenced to death by the court. But on the way to prison, the police van meets with an accident and all persons are killed. Years after, Sonia, who is now living as Sunil’s widow and working as a school teacher, finds out that Sunil is still alive, living with a new identity of Sudhir and is married to a rich women named...
